Safety: OSHA Voluntary Protection Program Star Site

Adelphia Gateway LLC is committed to safety. This commitment is demonstrated by our participation in the Federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s Voluntary Protection Program (VPP). VPP encourages cooperation among government, industry and labor to protect worker health and safety. It establishes performance criteria for health and safety management programs, assesses companies that apply for VPP status, and recognizes companies that meet its high standards with OSHA’s Star designation. Adelphia Gateway Safety and Maintenance

Natural gas pipelines have a strong safety record, and pipelines are the safest and most efficient means of transporting natural gas and petroleum products, according to National Transportation Safety Board statistics. Adelphia Gateway is regulated by the U.S. Department of Transportation Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) and FERC.

How to Recognize a Pipeline Leak

Use your senses of sight, smell and sound to identify a potential pipeline leak. Signs of a leak may include:

Sight

Dead or dying vegetation near the pipeline, oily sheen on water, pools of liquid on the ground near the pipeline, dirt or debris blowing into the air, fire or a dense white cloud or fog

Smell

Strong petroleum scent or other pungent odor, a smell similar to rotten eggs or sulfur, if odorant is added

Sound

Hissing, gurgling or roaring sound

What to Do If a Leak Occurs

Take these steps to ensure the safety of you and others if a pipeline leak is suspected or detected:

  • Leave the area immediately in an upwind direction.
  • Call 911.
  • Call the Adelphia Gateway LLC emergency number, 800-747-3375, to notify us of the location.
  • Turn off any equipment and eliminate any ignition source, if able to do so without risk of injury.

What Not to Do If a Leak Occurs

  • Do not come into direct contact with any escaping natural gas.
  • Do not start any motor vehicles, electrical equipment or use cell phones while in the area.
  • Do not attempt to operate any pipeline valves.
  • Do not attempt to extinguish a natural gas fire.
